Battleline
In the first half of the 18th century, a ‘colourful mix’ of designs featuring 64, 68, 70 and 80 guns were used as 3rd Rates. Unlike the other variants, which had two gun decks, the 80-gun ships were designed to have three decks.
In the second half of the century, new Royal Navy ships were based on two designs with 74 and 64 guns respectively. Over time, the 74-gun ships established themselves as the backbone of the battle line.
