1) Originally, the design, which was used for second-rate ships of the line from the mid-18th century onwards, only enabled two 12-pounders to be installed on the forecastle. However, it soon became common practice to close the gap between the forecastle and the quarterdeck. This enabled eight additional 12-pounders to be installed aft.

This was not taken into effect when the plan on which the illustration is based was drawn up. However, according to the Wikipedia article on HMS Duke, this new possibility was employed during construction. The armament list already includes the additional 12-pounders on the quarterdeck.
