1) The single mast carried several square sails one above the other on the navy’s ocean-going cutters. As was the case with full-rigged ships and brigs. This enormous sail area in relation to the size of the ship gave the small vessels tremendous speed.
However, gaff sails were also used occasionally, as on schooners.
2) This type had a wide range of armament. From small units armed only with swivel guns (which do not count as guns) to larger ones that almost matched the firepower of a large schooner or small brig sloop.
