Artillery and Weapons in the Age of Sail
I’ve started a new chapter in my drawings. Alongside the ship illustrations, there will soon be illustrations of artillery and personal weapons as well. You’ll always be finding the colour versions here.
18th Century Naval Mortar (according to zu Mondfeld)
Here's another mortar. The original in the previous illustration dates back to the early days of its use at sea in the late 17th century. This one is from the 18th century and shows that it now has its fixed place on the specially reinforced deck of the mortar ships.
17th Century Naval Mortar (according to Landström)
In connection with the illustration for the ‘Bombenketch’, I drew this early ship’s mortar. It was really more of a field mortar mounted on a ship’s carriage. Later mortars were mounted on specially reinforced sections of the deck using a fixed frame. I am actually working on an illustration of this at the moment.
