06-27-2026 Illustration: Frigate online

The current heatwave has even made its way into my workplace. Nevertheless, I intend to add the next finished illustration to the gallery – a French-style frigate – as part of the series on ship types.

Free reference material on French ships is hard to find online. Most of what’s available consists of British plans drawn up when adapting captured vessels. To remain impartial, I’ve chosen a Swedish adaptation of a french frigate. The fact that I have Chapman’s *Architektura Navalis* on my bookshelf has, of course, made my work a little bit easier. 😉

As drawing almost always ‘works’ for me, I was able to get started on my next project, despite the heat: the illustration for my planned post on corvettes. The source material is still rather patchy here, as this classification was mainly used by the French.

I’ve found a reference image nonetheless. However, it leaves plenty of room for interpretation. Fortunately, I’ve been able to gain some initial experience with this through my previous reconstructions.

And this is how far I’ve got so far:
